In
the following excerpt, Chari faces the moment when she must tell Vincent the
truth regarding her research.
Blurb:
When
her best friend is taken by a vampire, Dr. Charlotte Vinetti shifts her genetic
research focus in hopes of finding a cure. Five years later, she’s no closer to
her goal, and long-troubled by the one vampire she’d killed who was different
from the rest. Her worst nightmares become terrifying reality when she’s
captured and realizes her captors are intelligent, sentient beings rather than
the mindless creatures who continued to invade her home.
Vincent
was nearing the end of his strength. Haven’s trials over the past five years
had overtaxed his resources, but he knew with dread his problems were only
beginning when the hunter the Community had long sought was the reincarnation
of his deepest love. Forced by ancient promises to stand against the Bargain,
his only hope lies in ending their gypsy curse and winning her love, for only
then can he earn the Council’s forgiveness.
Excerpt:
Moment
of truth time. She decided to make sure he heard and understood everything
before he sprang the news on his friends. With a grim nod and half a plan, she
went down the hall and stopped before the door to her lab. She took a deep
breath, again to steady her voice. “Present scanner.” A framed portrait of
whoever had been in the frame at the time she bought it receded into the wall.
The electronic scanner dropped down to take its place. She pressed her palm to
the screen and the lock disengaged. “Everything’s down there,” she said with a
sigh and a wave of her arm.
Vincent
moved ahead of her as she’d hoped he would. She followed, and the moment she
was clear of the threshold, punched the panic button. He spun on her, furious.
His eyes blazed blue flame. “What did you do?”
“Excuse
me a minute,” she said, quickly brushing past him and down the stairs. He
grabbed her arm roughly. “I need to turn the alarm off. Police will be
dispatched after thirty seconds.” He released her and followed closely while
she went to one of the computer terminals and entered her pass key. The alarm
silenced.
“Now would you mind telling me what this
is all about?” His voice resonated with growing anger.
Think fast, Chari. “Let
me explain. This isn’t a trick. Well, not really.”
“I’m
waiting.”
“You-you’re
not going to like what you find. My work will probably make you angry. I want
to be sure you understand before any of your comrades pick up on your mental
vibes. My lab is encased in lead. Nothing gets through.”
While
he stood staring at her with barely contained fury, the sounds from the
surveillance equipment became violent. “O-o-oh, dear…” She turned on the
monitor and groaned. Pressing the intercom button, she said, “Okay, stop that,
give me your attention. Thanks. Please don’t tear my walls down. All you’ll
find behind them is steel and concrete. You’ll need explosives to break
through, with enough force to blow a hole in Fort Knox. Of course, that’ll
probably kill us, so please don’t.” She gave Vincent a cautiously hopeful
glance. “Thank you for not interrupting me.”
“I’m
still waiting for your explanation.”
“What have you done to Vincent?”
The
rage coming from the speaker sounded nothing like the man on the display.
Vincent heaved a sigh and stepped forward, motioned for her to show him which button
to push, and pushed it while she held her breath. “Hey, Jase, sorry about
that.”
“What’s
going on, Vincent? Why are you locked in?”
He
looked at her in question. She returned a pleading gaze and shook her head.
“Yeah, my fault. I was so anxious to see what she’d hidden down here I bumped
into something I shouldn’t have.”
“Well
open the door! I can’t read you.”
He
looked at her again. She raised her hands in a gesture of prayer. “Please,
Vincent. I…I can open the door, b-but…if you’ll just give me a chance…”
He
shook his head in resignation and pressed the button. “I’m afraid I’ve broken
the controls. She’ll need to make repairs.”
“How
long will that take?”
He
stepped back and motioned for her to reply. She gaped at him for a moment
before turning to the intercom. “I…I’m not sure. I’ll need to pull the panel
apart and check the circuitry. You guys don’t know your own strength, do you?”
It
was a flippant question, filled with enough agitation to get her point across.
She sensed Vincent’s tight surprise, but reasoned the only way to defuse the
situation outside was to imply she felt wronged. She released a pent breath
when Jason replied, “Very well. I’ll leave the servants to finish their tasks.
Report to me the minute you’re free, Vincent.”
He
stepped forward. “You have my word, Sire.” Jason winced, shook his head and
went off camera. “All right, Chari, I’ve purchased your chance. You may
enlighten me. I’ll…” He sighed his defeat. “I’ll try to understand.”
