WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW….

Morning and thank you for inviting me to play here today!  There’s that old saying, “write what you know” have you heard it?  For me it was a way to combine my love of romance with the real life medical drama I get to play in every day.

Love ER’s sexy Dr. Ross?  Gray’s Dr. McDreamy? Well…real life has a few of those type of docs hanging around, but mostly men like that are embellished upon—a lot! LOL  But that’s the best part of fiction, right?  To take the mundane and spin it into something special?

No blood…no guts…no puke…no glory! That’s what the down in the trenches true to life nurse’s playground.  The more drama slung in the units whether it be gossip, a patient crashing, or the drunk schizophrenic trying to get a few licks in and ending up in four point leather restraints just adds to the daily routine.

That’s what I love about my job.  No two shifts are ever alike and something is always going on.  If I’m frustrated over a certain aspect of work, I can usually work it out with pen and paper. That is how my first novel, The Doctor’s Deception came into being.  Frustrated by a string of Cardiovascular surgeons I’d worked with over the years yelling, cursing, and yes—even throwing things when things didn’t go their ways, I thought of every mean and nasty surgeon I’d encountered in several states, wrapped them up in one hot, yummy package, and made him NICE by the end of the book. J

That’s why I write medical romances…I write what I know, the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly make for a good book.  And who doesn’t love to curl up with a good book?

  2. Kudos to you for an interesting post, very pertinent for an author. That makes your books so authentic, Kathleen. I do similar. In case you're wondering how that translates into fairies, goddesses, and ghosts, it's because mythology and fairy tales are what I know and love best:) Keep up the good work!
